Post-acute care providers will be forced to demonstrate their value in more care settings as payment models evolve in the coming years, according to a new report by Avalere Health.
Most providers (95%) will be subject to new payment models in 2020 and 2021, say report authors, who forecasted healthcare trends to expect this year. Operators also will have to switch gears as the payment market evolves and places more focus on value-based care, the authors noted.
“Post-acute care is undergoing a dramatic transformation, forcing providers to redefine their roles and value as the market evolves beyond traditional, setting-specific business and payment models toward a more integrated approach focused on value and outcomes,” the report states.
The shift will force providers to demonstrate their value in other care settings, such as home health.
“Some providers may choose to become payers themselves, launching Special Needs Plans to secure their foothold in the changing market,” the authors wrote.
Avalere Health CEO Dan Mendelson noted the same sentiment in a December article he wrote, saying providers “must rethink care delivery.”
“Post-acute care providers have never played a more essential role, but to thrive in this shifting landscape, post-acute business models must change,” he said.
