The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a new vaccine for the upcoming flu season.

FluLaval will be used to immunize people 18 and older. The maker of the vaccine is ID Biomedical Corporation of Quebec, Canada, a subsidiary of GlaxoSmithKline Biologics. FluLaval has been available in Canada since 2001. Nursing home residents are some of the most vulnerable to the seasonal flu, and seniors account for the most fatalities each year from flu complications.

Vaccine manufacturers are projected to make a total of 115 million doses for the 2006-2007 season overall.
