While the total number of nursing homes continues to hover around 16,000 nationwide, assisted living communities are experiencing explosive growth, according to a new report from the American Health Care Association.

The annual overview pegs the assisted living facility total at 35,451. However, nursing facilities continue to account for 65% of the 2.6 million beds/units in the market, the report finds.

In 2004, nursing facilities realized $162 in net per diem revenue. On average, nursing home residents needed help with 3.9 activities of daily living. See the full report at http://www.ahca.org/research/index.html.
