Moderate alcohol consumption may reduce risk of heart failure among older adults, according to new study data in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Moderate drinkers — those who had one to six drinks a week — had about an 18% lower risk of developing heart failure than those who don’t drink at all, the study found. Those consuming 7 to 10 drinks per week reduced their risk of heart failure by 34%.
Researchers studied nearly 6,000 Medicare beneficiaries nationwide for 7 to 10 years. The Cardiovascular Health Study, which was launched in 1989, followed the health status of Medicare recipients nationwide.
