Naps may help night nurses

Napping on the job may be beneficial for nurses working night shifts, according to a new study.

Researchers implemented a napping pilot program in a hospital nursing unit and found more than 52% of the nurses who slept during their shifts reported feeling “alert and fresh” after waking up. The nurses also gave an average score of 7.3 out of 10 when asked to rate the nap’s effectiveness.

The average duration of the naps was 31 minutes and the results were compiled from 153 surveys taken before and after the nurses slept.

The results of the study were published in the American Journal of Nursing.
