Commemorating the fifth anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Olmstead decision, which protects disabled people from being institutionalized against their will, the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted a health poll to survey Americans’ views of disability.
About 65% of those surveyed said there is discrimination against people with disabilities in this country today, and 40% said that the U.S. healthcare system either “very” or “somewhat” often treats people unfairly based on physical disability.
More than 90% of those polled support governmental reforms to help the disabled, and 75% say government leaders should address how to help families with the cost of long-term care for the elderly or disabled.
