Dr. Karen Bell has been tapped as the new chair of the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology.

The Certification Commission for Health Information Technology is an independent agency whose mission it is to certify healthcare information technology and expand its use through all fields of healthcare. Under the recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the federal government made additional funding available to help spur adoption of healthcare IT.

Bell has previously served as director of the Office of Health Information Technology Adoption and acting deputy of the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) at the Department of Health and Human Services. She replaces former Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mark Leavitt, who chaired CCHIT since 2004.
