For his 113th birthday this week, the world’s oldest man received gifts, flowers and $1,000 from his town’s mayor. What he wants, however, is to live another five years.

Born September 18, 1895, in Miyakonojo, Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan, Tomoji Tanabe worked as a civil engineer and land surveyor for many years. He has eight children, 25 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren. Tanabe has been the world’s oldest man since the death of his predecessor, Emiliano Mercado del Toro, of Puerto Rico, on Jan. 24, 2007. Tanabe credits his good health and old age to abstinence from alcohol and tobacco.

While he holds the title of oldest living man, Tanabe is in fact the 11th oldest person in the world. The world’s oldest person is 115-year-old Edna Parker, a resident at Heritage House Convalescent Center in Shelbyville, IN. She celebrated her birthday on April 20.
