When the World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics kicks off Sunday in Paris, one of the main attractions will be a presentation entitled “Ageing Is No Longer an Unsolved Biological Problem.” Dr. Leonard Hayflick of the University of California, San Francisco will present new findings at the session. Hayflick will assert that the complex molecules that comprise our bodies tend to become dysfunctional over time. This happens because the energy needed to keep them in good working order diminishes. As the ability of our molecules to be repaired diminishes, our bodies show the signs of increasingly inefficient maintenance. In other words, we begin to look older.
