Workers at seven nursing homes are threatening to strike on Sept. 29 unless state officials take over the facilities.
Union leaders allege that the nursing homes’ owners fail to maintain adequate staffing levels, make pension payments and provide uniform allowances, according to the Hartford Courant. The workers also claim the owners pocketed union dues.
The owners filed for separate Chapter 11 bankruptcy petitions for each home in June. All seven facilities are experiencing financial difficulties. Although union leaders say there are not enough employees to provide proper care for the residents, the Connecticut state health department has not found any indications that the health of the residents is threatened at any of the facilities.
