A new Norwegian study found that drinking coffee can reduce the risks of developing Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease and Parkinson’s.

Women who drank between one and three cups of coffee a day cut their risk of contracting cardiovascular diseases and other conditions, including diabetes and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, by between 20% to 25%, according to Norwegian researchers who studied data on 27,000 women in the United States.

The researchers point to the high level of antioxidants in coffee as a possible contributing factor. Antioxidants attack free radicals, which are at the root of many diseases. Researchers noted, however, that any positive effects of coffee are offset by drinking in excess of five cups a day. They did not qualify why.
