People who survive a stroke have eight times the risk of developing depression than people without a history of stroke, a recent study found.

Researchers at Copenhagen University in Denmark found the most cases of depression among stroke survivors appeared within the first three months after the stroke occurred.

Clinicians should be aware of the risks and large number of deaths that could be attributed to depression after stroke, researchers warned.
