A diet high in an omega-3 fatty acid found prominently in some cold-water fish and nuts dramatically slowed the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in mice, according to researchers from the University of California at Los Angeles and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Salmon, sardines, mackerel, halibut, almonds, walnuts and soy are just some of the foods high in docosahexenoic acid (DHA), scientists say. The acid notably reduced harmful brain plaques that come with Alzheimer’s, according to their article in an online edition of the Journal of Neuroscience.

Although the study involved mice, Greg M. Cole, a neuroscientist at UCLA and the Los Angeles V.A. said that these findings are a bit different in that they point to therapy that is easy to come by, and that already has been heralded as treatment for other conditions.
