A Texas psychiatrist has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for submitting claims for services at a nursing home that were never provided.

Robert Hadley Gross, M.D., was sentenced last Wednesday to 71 months in federal prison for routinely billing Medicare and Medicaid for services he claimed to have provided to nursing home residents between January 2009 and June 2014. Gross was also fined $100,000 and must pay $1.8 million in restitution.

The services Gross provided to the nursing home were frequently billed incorrectly, or were never provided, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas. In some instances the residents may have been discharged or died prior to Gross’ alleged visits. Gross also carried out the scheme at mental health facilities and through an organization for children in foster care.

Gross was found guilty in September of one count of healthcare fraud; he was originally indicted in 2014 on more than 50 counts of billing fraud, the Associated Press reported.
