Stimulus funds not going to intended targets, GAO asserts

So far, states have received roughly $29 billion in stimulus funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. But many of these dollars do not appear to be going toward Medicaid services and other obvious targets, according to a report from the General Accountability Office. One problem seems to be that as states rush to put these newfound dollars to work, they are making dubious choices, the GAO says. As a result, nursing home operators and other eldercare providers are missing out on much-needed funding. Let's hope that dollars removed from the balance of the program are used more wisely.
