Novo Nordisk announces approval of prefilled insulin pens

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Novo Nordisk’s prefilled insulin pens called the NovoLog® FlexTouch® and Levemir® FlexTouch®.

FlexTouch® pens’ dosing mechanism ensures the push-button does not extend at any dose and allows insulin to be administered by pressing the low dose force button. Both pens have 1-unit increments in dosing.

NovoLog® should not be mixed with any other insulin when used in a pump or with any insulin other than NPH when used with injections by syringe, the company said.

Novo Nordisk plans to make both pens available in the United States within the next year. FlexTouch® was approved by the European Commission in July 2011 and has launched in several countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark and Japan.
