New UV system reduces HAIs

A new combined lighting and air purification system may be able to heavily reduce healthcare-acquired infections in nursing homes and hospitals.

The Arcalux® HRMS, made by American Green Technology and Improved Illumination, is installed in a ceiling as a light fixture, but is actually an air purification system using less than 100 watts of energy. Air from areas such as isolation rooms or nursing stations is cleansed through a UV system. The system is easy to maintain, and the cost of installation will be recouped by preventing one healthcare-acquired infection, the company said.
