Medicare products and services are not misused, providers counter

It's no secret that more nursing homes are turning to Medicare-covered products and services. The switch has helped many an operator improve care and the bottom line. But a recent Washington Post analysis paints a distorted picture of one related practice, industry spokesmen are alleging. The article implies many operators are engaging in dubious upcoding, whereby unqualified residents are placed in higher (and better reimbursed) Resource Utilization Groups. The American Health Care Association's Bruce Yarwood denounced the suggestion as “irresponsible and inaccurate.” He added that “any suggestion that facilities are able to bill any way that they wish are simply false and misguided.”
