For years, nursing home operators have had to prepare for older and sicker residents. But it appears that a new wave of younger, heavier residents will also be entering facilities. A new report from the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation finds that the country’s obesity epidemic continues to worsen. In fact, adult obesity rates climbed in 28 states during the past year and now exceed 25% in more than two-thirds of the states. Unless these trends reverse, long-term care operators will need to find more products designed to accommodate the chronic-care needs of overweight residents.
