Intuity Medical Inc. has said it has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to market its POGO® Automatic™ Blood Glucose Monitoring System.

The system is the first blood glucose meter and multi-test cartridge to provide automatic testing with lancing, blood collection and analysis in one step, the company said.

By having all testing supplies in a cartridge, POGO provides ease of use and discretion, it added. The patient presses the POGO test port and POGO automatically lances the finger, collects a blood sample and displays a result after a four-second countdown.

The blood sample is 0.25 microliters. After 10 tests, the patient disposes the self-contained cartridge.

The system reduces the biohazards related to used lancets and test strips in public, the company said.

“More than half of the 287 patients in our pivotal clinical study reported that they would better adhere to their healthcare professional’s recommended testing schedule using POGO as compared to their current meter,” commented Emory V. Anderson, president and CEO of Intuity Medical.
