American HealthTech chose West Rest Haven Nursing Home for a CareHero award for the facility’s work following a devastating fertilizer explosion.

The blast, which occurred in West, TX, on April 17, destroyed the nursing home, shattering windows, breaking glass and in some cases burying residents under debris. Staff picked up some residents in wheelchairs to carry them to safety.

Despite evacuation plans, “We quickly learned that no one could have possibly prepared completely for what happened to us that night. You can’t roll wheelchairs, charts and medication carts over a foot of debris,” said Rose Ann Morris, West Rest Haven Nursing Home administrator. “… Mattresses were thrown across the glass shards on the window sills as a means of removing the residents without further injury.”

West Rest Haven has started the process of rebuilding. It uses AHT for clinical and financial software.

“West Rest Haven’s staff and the West community at large exemplify the meaning of CareHero,” said Teresa Chase, AHT president.
