Minimally invasive stimulation of the vagus nerve may help older adults avoid delirium after surgery, Duke University researchers found.

In the study in Brain Stimulation, they showed how vagus nerve stimulators used to treat epileptic seizures can reverse brain inflammation.

“Delirium is now recognized as the most common complication in older adults after surgery,” said Niccolò Terrando, Ph.D. “For some, it can lead to severe complications and even contribute to long-lasting cognitive deficits, like dementia.”
