Wisconsin plans to close a 25-year-old transitional housing program for veterans that shares space with a traditional nursing home.

Officials said the closure of Wisconsin Veterans Home at King was prompted by concerns expressed by federal regulators in June. Homeless veterans moved into King last year when the program’s original home was demolished.

The state’s Veterans Homes Administrator now says federal agencies see co-positioning all beds on one floor as problematic. Resident beds are still legally labeled SNF beds, and there is no barrier between the two units.
