A new program from the American College of Surgeons seeks to  improve seniors’ health outcomes. The Geriatric Surgery Verification Program includes 30 standards to help patients make better healthcare decisions.

The program provides vital information needed to choose surgical or non-surgical options, program developers said. It will be widely available in October.

Developers saw a gap for a program that focused on the unique needs of older adults, according to Clifford Y. Ko, M.D., director of the ACS Division of Research and Optimal Patient Care.
