Applications were expected to begin rolling in punctually on Sept. 29 as long-term care providers, among others, seek their share of a new, $25.5 billion round of coronavirus relief funding.

The cash infusion follows months of increasingly desperate pleas from operators who have said they needed additional help to combat COVID-19.

“This funding critically helps healthcare providers who have endured demanding workloads and significant financial strains amidst the pandemic,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a Sept. 10 statement.

The package includes $8.5 billion in American Rescue Plan resources for providers who serve rural Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program or Medicare patients, and $17 billion in Provider Relief Funds for providers with documented COVID-related revenue loss or expenses. This fourth PRF phase covers July 1, 2020, through March 31, 2021.

Experts advised applying early for funds, which can be used for supplies or staffing costs.
