The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services gave nursing home operators a running start just before Memorial Day toward the October 1 rollout of the new Patient-Driven Payment Model.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services quietly posted an early release of the MDS 3.0 RAI Manual v1.17 on May 20. Although it’s officially a draft version, the document thrilled providers and trainers because it allows them to actively prepare for the most notable payment and resident classification changes in more than a generation.

Experts said they noted no big surprises in the 1,299-page manual, although CMS said providers should remain alert for updates.

Of particular value is a 117-page section that tracks all changes. Chapter 2 also is much shorter this year because it deals with instructions about required assessments, which have fallen in number under PDPM.
