Long-term care took center stage for a brief moment during last month’s Democratic presidential primary debate.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar called for increased access to long-term care and reduced costs for long-term care insurance as candidates discussed Medicare for All and the public option.

“What should we do about long-term care, the elephant that doesn’t even fit in this room? We need to make it easier for people to get long-term care insurance. We need to make it easier for them to pay for their premiums,” she said.

All the major presidential candidates, including Klobuchar, have released plans for those receiving long-term supports and services, and their families. The proposals also address higher pay for direct care workers, paid family leave for caregivers, and more funding for Older Americans Act programs.

Mark Parkinson, CEO and president of the American Health Care Association,  welcomed the coverage. “This is the start of what you will see much more of in the future,” he predicted.
