Brookdale Senior Living has partnered with Dialyze Direct to add on-site dialysis treatment options at four continuing care retirement communities in Texas.

Although the service will be housed in skilled nursing settings, dialysis also will be available to assisted living, memory care and independent living residents. Brookdale said many of its residents could not get reimbursed for transportation and therefore had to use rideshare services to get to kidney care appointment.

On-site dialysis eliminates travel and wait time for residents, giving them more time to spend in therapy or engaging in their communities.

Dialysis has been seen as a potentially high growth area for some providers in the era of the Patient Driven Payment Model.

Dialyze Direct also will offer residents shorter treatments five days a week, versus three longer sessions, which has been shown to decrease recovery time and reduce rehospitalizations.

“Brookdale wants to continue to grow and set the stage for a healthcare-focused senior living environment,” said Kim Elliott, Brookdale’s senior vice president of clinical services.

Brookdale Galleria in Houston began offering dialysis in May, while Brookdale Patriot Heights in San Antonio offers bedside dialysis treatment and Brookdale Willowbrook Place features a suite with eight chairs. A clinic is also set to open at Brookdale Lakeway in the Austin area.

Two new Lakeway residents chose the continuing care retirement community because of the on-site dialysis clinic, officials recently said.

Brookdale is one of the largest senior living operators in North America and is often seen as a market-mover: In other words, the rest of senior care watches when Brookdale acts.

Ben Williams, regional vice president of marketing for Dialyze Direct, said the “innovative treatment model” leads to improved patient outcomes, decreased rehospitalizations, higher reimbursements and the opportunity for improved quality of life.
