FLORIDA —The state of Florida evacuated 72 nursing homes and assisted living facilities in late August in an effort to keep residents safe from Hurricane Dorian.

Just four of the long-term care facilities were evacuated for not having emergency generators and access to backup power, which became required under a new law in the wake of 2017’s Hurricane Irma.

Mandatory evacuation orders also were issued in other states along the East Coast, and federal officials declared public health emergencies for Georgia and South Carolina.

The declaration allowed Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries and providers to have continued access to services during the storm.
