Democrat lawmakers will present a united front against any plan to privatize the Medicare program, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told the Washington Post this week.

The Medicare scenario would mirror how a newly-elected President George W. Bush announced plans to partially privatize Social Security, Pelosi noted. Democrats pushed back; Bush’s plan lost some of its popularity; and the Democrat’s move was credited to helping the party win back Congress in 2006.

“At that time, we committed to each other that we would be unified and disciplined,” Pelosi said. “Everybody stuck together. The opportunity that we have now is the equivalent of the opportunity we had in ’05.”

Should House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) receive the green light from President-elect Donald Trump to pursue Medicare privatization — going against Trump’s campaign promises to protect entitlements — Pelosi said Democrats would have an opportunity to showcase a “stark difference” between the two parties.

“It’s ideological with the Speaker to take away the guarantee of Medicare,” Pelosi told the Post. “But that is a fundamental pillar of health and economic security. And we will not go down that path.”
