Salmon's Asif Merchant

Salmon at Natick, a senior living community with skilled nursing, rehabilitation, assisted living and memory care has hired Asif Merchant, M.D., as medical director.

Merchant serves as a COVID-19 vaccine advisor to Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker. He is also chief of geriatrics at the extended care network at Newton Wellesley Hospital and a partner of New England Community Medical Services. 

At Newton, Merchant oversees occupational therapy for older adults in the greater Boston area. As partner of NECMS, he established a collaborative practice of more than 50 physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. They provide a range of clinical care in skilled nursing and  assisted living settings in and around Boston. 

Merchant completed an internal medicine residency at North Shore University. He served fellowships at Harvard School of Medicine and Long Island Jewish Medical Center for Medical Education and Geriatric Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine and geriatric, palliative and hospice care. Merchant also chairs the geriatrics committee of the Massachusetts Medical Society and is an associate clinical professor at Tufts School of Medicine. 

In September 2020, Merchant was appointed to Baker’s COVID Vaccine Advisory Group. There, he advocated for the vaccination of homebound residents. He also serves on the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Reopening of Nursing Home in MA task force.

Salmon also announced Feb. 9 that it had named three new nurse practitioners to serve its Beaumont and Whitney Place facilities.
