Women have a better chance of surviving a stroke and havea tendency to live longer after a stroke than men do, according to a recentreport out of Denmark.

Nearly 40,000 patient cases were studied over five yearsand “except for the period between 30 and 60 days after stroke, mortalityis markedly lower in female stroke survivors,” authors wrote.

Although at first glance the data seemed to indicate thatmen had a higher likelihood of survival, after adjusting the data analysis toinclude factors such as age, stroke severity and subtype and cardiovascularrisk, it became clear to researchers that women had the higher rate ofsurvival.
