While the well-publicized coronavirus has caused few outbreaks in the U.S., more than 22 million people nationwide have been bit by the flu bug this season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In fact, the flu has sent more than 210,000 people to the hospital and resulted in more than 12,000 deaths, the CDC adds. Every state has reported flu outbreaks, with 47 indicating high activity. Influenza A has accounted for 54% of the cases, while Influenza B compromised 46%.

Typical flu symptoms include coughing, sore throat, fever or feeling feverish, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, headaches and fatigue.

Seniors and caregivers are advised to take common sense precautions to avoid the flu. These include:

•  Washing one’s hands often

•    Avoiding others who are sick

•  Taking the time to get a flu shot

•  Avoiding touching one’s eyes, nose and mouth.

•  Cleaning/disinfecting surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs.
