Charles E. Smith Life Communities scored a Gold Award in the Dignity category of McKnight's 2015 Technology Awards for its use of custom interactive memory care software.

Since then, the program has continued to grow to include more brain games such as Jeopardy!, as well as iPad support, explains Beth DeLucenay, vice president of strategic planning.

The Rockville, MD, campus also is exploring bringing the software to residents living in its other communities.

“We are evaluating how we can expand our initiative into our housing and assisted living residences so that our 1,100 campus residents can use the software and also reap the benefits,” DeLucenay says.

Charles E. Smith is currently working toward training more staff on the software, and linking up usage data to its electronic health records so it's available to staff. The provider also is testing out a mobile cart that can help deliver the games to specific units or individual rooms for residents who have mobility restrictions.

“Our program keeps evolving to meet the needs of our patients,” DeLucenay says.
