Governor Jim Justice

An audit of one West Virginia’s state veterans’ nursing home has revealed more than $5 million in unpaid bills.

Gov. Jim Justice (R) announced findings from the audit Wednesday, which was ordered by the Department of Veterans Assistance after previously learning of financial problems at the home. Billing issues date back to 2013, occurring prior to the implementation of a new financial management system, according to a press release.

Justice said the state made on-site visits to the Clarksburg nursing facility in October to interview employees and review records.

They have made arrangements to pay “crucial vendors” to ensure no service interruptions for the facility’s 110 veterans. State officials have also appointed new leadership at the facility earlier this month, along with a new chief financial officer at the Department of Veterans Assistance, according to the announcement.
