Amateur photographers will soon be the focus themselves again, and they have a New York skilled nursing facility to thank for it.

The Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a 460-bed SNF in Long Island, announced Tuesday that it had opened submissions for its 29th annual photo contest.

The provider is encouraging all amateur photographers, including students, to submit their best photos for the competition. About 1,000 submissions arrive from around the world each year, organizers said.

The photos are judged by a panel of professional photographers who select the winners based on clarity, composition, subject matter and suitability for display. The photo contest features 12 categories, including landscapes, travel, wildlife, nature and still.

Winners will receive a recognition award, cash prizes and have an opportunity for their work to be displayed at Gurwin’s Tiffen Gallery for residents, staff and visitors to see. Last year’s photo contest winner is pictured above.

In addition, Gurwin residents and staff will also pick their favorites among the entries.

“Photos not selected for an award are repurposed as reminiscence aids, visual stimulation and art therapy, providing a source of comfort and inspiration, specifically for residents in the Center’s memory care unit and adult day care programs, making each photo submission a ‘winner,’” a Gurwin spokeswoman said.

The photo contest is being sponsored by The Tiffen Company, a New York-based manufacturer of glass filters for photography, film and other photography-related products.

Up to seven photographs per person, in color or black-and-white, may be submitted. The entry deadline is June 15, 2022.
