Even though spring isn’t here yet, a New York florist wants nursing home residents to know that compassion is always in season.

Jessica Powell, owner of DeLuxe Floral Design in Bath, NY, is gearing up for the fourth annual “Let Kindness Bloom” campaign, which provides bright and colorful bouquets to residents at local nursing homes.

“It’s always that smile the flowers bring to them that makes it so important to me,” Powell said. “I really like to give back to the community. I like to bring sunshine to those that need it.”

The initiative is funded by anonymous donations. Last year, 400 residents at 10 local nursing homes received sponsored bouquets.

This year the goal is 750 bouquets. As of Wednesday, they were about 20 arrangements short of hitting that target. One hundred sponsors had taken part to spread cheer in the south-central part of the state.

“If you can spare $20 to bring a smile to one of the Senior Residents at these locations would be the perfect way to close out this campaign,” Powell wrote in a social media message noting ways to help the cause.

The campaign runs through Friday, but the smiles it produces may linger until spring actually does arrive.
