The former head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will now chair a private research organization.

Mark McClellan, who was administrator at CMS for more than two years, has been tapped to chair the Reagan-Udall Foundation. The foundation serves to modernize medical, veterinary, food, food ingredient, and cosmetic product development, and enhance product safety, among other goals. It was created as part of a new law reauthorizing FDA drug and medical device user-fee programs.

McClellan, who also served as FDA commissioner, left CMS in 2006 to join the private sector. Kerry Weems is now serving as CMS’s acting administrator. McClellan is currently the director of the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at the Brookings Institution.
