Nursing home providers in North Carolina could be among those affected after the state’s failure to pass a state budget delayed an overhaul of its Medicaid program.

The revamp was in progress for years until the Legislature and Gov. Roy Cooper (D) this week did not come to terms on a budget. The retooling involves a move to a managed-care system, in which the state contracts with private health insurance companies.

In the news release, the state’s Department of Health and Human Services said the delay was due to the General Assembly not taking “needed action” to provide new spending and program authority for the transition. In October, Secretary of DHSS Mandy Cohen warned lawmakers that Medicaid transformation could not stay on track without a state budget in place by mid-November.

The Legislature, which adjourned for the year, will reconvene in January.
