Sex offenders at LTC facilities number in hundreds, GAO report finds
Providers are gearing up for a possible backlash as a result of a government report on the prevalence of sexual offenders in nursing homes.Nearly 700 registered sex offenders were living in long-term care facilities in 2005, according to the Government Accountability Office, which cited statistics from the National Sex Offender Registry. This represents about 0.5% of the 1.5 million residents in these facilities. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) indicated the report contains information providers have seen in the past.
The GAO has been conducting an ongoing investigation regarding sexual offenders living in nursing homes and intermediate care facilities for people with mental retardation.
