Leadership positions at continuing care retirement communities saw healthy salary increases over the last year, with executive directors earning 4.36% more and directors of nursing receiving pay bumps of 3.56%. This is according to the 2020-2021 CRCC Salary & Benefits Report, an annual report released by Hospital & Healthcare Compensation Service (HHCS).

Executive directors earned $182,056 this year, an increase of 4.36% compared to 2019. Meanwhile, directors of nursing made $101,332 in 2020. That compares with $97,848 in 2019. The 2019 increase for DONs in CCRCs was 2.43%, HHCS said. This chart outlining the national trend of average salaries compares the same participating facilities year to year.

Other high-level positions that earned more included nursing home administrators, who enjoyed salary increases of 3.92% from $116,228 in 2019 and chief financial officers, who made $148,051 this year, which equated to an increase of 4.13%.

Hourly positions also experienced robust raises, with certified nurse aides receiving an increase of 4.62% to $15.20 an hour. The hourly position that gained the most was waitperson with a 6.64% pay hike to an hourly average $12.27. Dietary aide received a substantial 5.64% increase to $12.25 an hour. Some 5565 CCRC/life plan communities participated in this year’s study, an increase from 506 last year. The report gathered data on more than 79,500 employees.
