Statins, which are typically prescribed to lower cholesterol, alleviated chronic coughing in patients with lung disease, according to a study from the University of Edinburgh.
High doses of statins over six months resulted in improvement in coughing for roughly a third of British patients with bronchiectasis, which causes lung inflammation, coughing and chest infections.
The research indicates stains may offer an alternative to antibiotic treatment, which can raise the risk of MRSA or C. difficile.
Results were published Monday in Lancet Respiratory Medicine.
