Deaths linked to Alzheimer’s disease have increased in the last decade while those for stroke, breast cancer and HIV have dropped, said researchers calling for more funding for the memory-robbing disease. Without treatment breakthroughs, the number of people in the United States ages 65 and older whose memories and personalities are claimed by the disease will more than double to 13.8 million in 2050, according to a new report from the Alzheimer’s Association. Several medications that slow the disease’s symptoms have been approved. But none can reverse the terminal condition. The Obama administration is spending $80 million this year to boost research in this area. But advocates claim the needed amount is closer to $2 billion.
