New door handle takes tech world by storm

News of PullClean, a custom door handle that dispenses hand sanitizer, could potentially revolutionize infection control practices, its creators say.

The British design studio Agency of Design’s concept includes software called CountClean, which monitors how often people sanitize their hands and the amount of hand sanitizer left in the handle. It fits latchless doors and fits on the door with two bolts.

Agency of Design has begun trials in U.S. hospitals and says rates of proper hand sanitizing rose by more than 50%. There are plans that the device will be available for around $200 by the end of 2014; the company is now taking reservations.

The device has been featured in Wired, The Verge and Design & Trend.
