Private nursing home room rates rise by 4.6% from 2009 to 2010

Rates for a private room in a nursing home in the United States expanded by 4.6% from 2009 to 2010, according to an annual report by the MetLife Mature Market Institute. That makes the average rate $229 per day, or $83,585 per year.

The increase follows a 3.3% increase from 2008 to 2009. Again, the highest average daily nursing home rates are in Alaska. The average rate there is now $687 for a private room and $610 for a semi-private room. Also, as in 2009, private nursing home room costs were lowest in Louisiana.

Meanwhile, rates for a private room in an assisted living facility rose 5.2%, on average, to $3,293 per month, or $39,516 per year. Rates for a private assisted living facility room rose by 3.3% last year.
