The nation’s biggest provider of pharmaceuticals to nursing homes has begun a recall of all drugs shipped from a factory it recently shuttered because of a warning from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration about possible penicillin contamination, according to a news report.

Omnicare Inc. of Covington, KY, closed its Heartland plant in Toledo in July after production-quality issues led to seven recalls of drugs, including one batch of 402 different drugs that might have been mislabeled. The FDA also later cited the company for violating government rules that requires penicillin products to be handled in a separate facility.

The scope of the expanded recall is unclear, FDA officials told The Cincinnati Enquirer. “Their (Feb. 16) letter indicates their recall of anything else out there on the market in nursing homes,” according to Charles Price, compliance officer in the FDA’s district office in Cincinnati. Calls to Omnicare seeking comment Monday were not returned.
