A Tennessee nursing home is rebounding after being hit with a seven-figure fine from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Signature Healthcare at Saint Francis, located in Memphis, incurred the $1.23 million fine earlier this year after state surveyors cited the facility for 35 deficiencies including medication errors, dirty bathrooms and neglect of residents, according to Memphis CBS affiliate WREG

McKnight’s contacted Signature for comments on Friday. Signature media relations manager Ben Adkins responded with comments Monday morning.

“There is much more history and many more facts than were fairly reported about the survey and fines at Signature HealthCARE at Francis.  At no time did Signature HealthCARE at Saint Francis lose its certification; this was inaccurately reported,” Adkins said. “And, due to the great work of our staff, the facility cleared all cited deficiencies the very first time the state surveyors returned.  SHC at Saint Francis has long since made many positive changes and moved forward with our commitment to continually enhance care and quality of life for all the residents and families we serve.”

CMS initially said it would temporarily halt reimbursements to the facility, however, later changed its decision which resulted in the fine, Adkins said.

Signature Healthcare completed payment of the fine this month, and has hired a new administrator, director of nursing and medical director, WREG reported. It is among the largest nursing home chains in the country, with 126 facilities in 10 states.
