The developers of the online Nursing Home Inspect updated its database this week to allow consumers to comb through 134,602 nursing home inspection deficiencies.

Developed by the investigative journalism newsroom ProPublica, Nursing Home Inspect allows users to search federal nursing home inspection report narratives by keyword.

According to ProPublica, the most common deficiency, cited 8,281 times, was a home’s failure to ensure that it was free of accident hazards. The second most common deficiency involved failure to follow proper hand-washing protocols. A recent study tied hand-hygiene practices to nursing home staffing levels.

ProPublica’s most recent update to the site reflects recent changes to Nursing Home Compare, which is overseen by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. CMS is no longer redacting residents’ gender from the reports that are published. However, the agency is still not releasing residents’ diagnoses or prescribed medications in the reports.
