Students returned to classes Wednesday at a New York City high school where more than 200 nursing home evacuees still reside.

Brooklyn Technical, considered one of the city’s elite high schools, has its cafeteria and several classrooms occupied by refugees from Hurricane Sandy. The seventh and eighth floors of the school host residents from two nursing homes that remain uninhabitable after Sandy hit the area Nov. 5.

The school housed nearly 600 evacuees from Coney Island, the Rockaways and other hard-hit areas of Brooklyn and Queens. The city continues to seek facilities for the patients, some of whom have mental disabilities.

Teachers said that classrooms housing evacuees smelled of garbage and human waste. Students aren’t allowed on the floors housing evacuees and extra security has been ordered, the school said.

Brooklyn Tech is a magnet school that draws 5,500 students.
