Using a more simplified medication regimen and tailoring glycemic targets for older adults with both diabetes and cognitive impairment are among new guidelines for providers to address the disease.

The Endocrine Society recently issued these new practice guidelines to aid in treating diabetes, which currently affects about 33% of seniors in the U.S. Other recommendations include targeting blood pressure levels of 140/90 mmHg to decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular problems, and administering annual eye exams to detect retinal disease.

Endocrine Society officials debuted the new guidelines at their annual meeting, ENDO 2019, in New Orleans, which concluded Tuesday. “Treatment of Diabetes in Older Adults: An Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guideline” will also appear in the May issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
